If you walk into a major national bank today, you are often treated like a number on a spreadsheet. But in a city like Tifton, Georgia, where deep agricultural roots blend with a rapidly growing industrial and residential landscape, businesses and families need more than an automated system. They need a financial partner who actually answers the phone.
In a recent episode of the CBC Connect podcast, host Matt Malone (VP and Marketing Director) sat down with two pillars of the Tifton banking community: Morris Tankersley (VP and Tifton Market President) and Cindy Watson (VP and Commercial Lender). Together, they shared insights on how Tifton is changing, how CBC Bank has grown alongside it, and why local decision-making is the ultimate advantage for South Georgia communities.
How is the economy in Tifton, Georgia growing?
Historically known as a strong agricultural hub, Tifton has rapidly diversified into industrial and residential sectors.
Driven by organizations like Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College (ABAC), the University of Georgia (UGA) Tifton campus, and new developments in the local industrial park (including major brands like Coca-Cola), Tifton is attracting an influx of businesses and out-of-state residents.
What are the benefits of choosing a community bank like CBC Bank?
The primary benefit of a community bank is local decision-making.
Unlike major national banks, lenders at CBC Bank do not have to route requests through corporate offices in Atlanta or Jacksonville. They can consult directly with their local executive leadership to provide fast, customized financial solutions that work specifically for Tifton’s unique market.
The Changing Landscape of Tifton, Georgia
Tifton has always sat at the geographic heart of South Georgia, uniquely positioned at the intersection of I-75 and Highway 82. This strategic location has triggered a massive influx of businesses from North Georgia and Florida.
Cindy Watson, who has spent over 27 years banking in Tifton, has witnessed this evolution firsthand.
"In the past, Tifton was more of an ag community, and we've really seen some changes there as far as economic growth," Cindy notes. "Our industrial park has really blossomed... Residential has grown, and we've just seen a lot of good changes."
A major driver of this shift is the explosive growth of ABAC. Morris recalls a time when ABAC was primarily a commuter college with a few hundred students. Today, it boasts over 3,500 residential students coming from North Carolina, Florida, and beyond, many of whom choose to stay and build their lives in Tifton after graduation.
Real Stories of Local Impact
CBC Bank entered the Tifton market in 2012. Since then, the local team has focused heavily on relationship-driven banking rather than transaction-driven banking.
When asked about how this looks in practice, Morris and Cindy highlighted a few key milestones:
-
Sustaining Commercial Growth: CBC Bank recently partnered with an expanding local business that required capital to scale. Because of their structure, the Tifton team sat down directly with the bank's CEO and Chief Lending Officer to structure a fast, tailored financing plan to secure the business’s future.
-
Expanding Regional Healthcare: Cindy recalled helping a specialized client open a medical clinic in Tifton. That successful relationship eventually grew, allowing CBC Bank to finance two additional locations in Douglas and Albany, followed by the client's residential and secondary homes.
-
Life's Big Moments: Community banking isn't just about commercial lines of credit. Morris shared a favorite memory of financing a local customer’s engagement ring years ago. To this day, the couple still reminds him that they wouldn't be married without that initial local loan.
Community Banking with a Personal Touch
CBC Bank believes deeply that banking is ultimately about people.
From the teller window to online banking support, those everyday interactions help build trust, strengthen relationships, and create a better experience for customers throughout the community.
